About Matt

Matt is a freelance journalist currently living in New York City. A graduate of Leeds University in the UK and University of California, Los Angeles, he got a double first in history. In the UK his work has appeared in the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mirror, and the Independent. In the U.S. his work has been in the Chicago Tribune, Newsday, the Southern Poverty Center, the New York Post, the Indypendent, the Orlando Sentinel, and the Florida Sun-Sentinel. He also publishes frequently in the Buenos Aires Herald.

In 2006, he won the Student Feature Writer of the Year Award in the Guardian Student Media Awards, and was shortlisted for the Overall Student Journalist of the Year. In the NUS/ Daily Mirror Student Media Awards, he was runner up in the the Best Student Reporter Award, and shortlisted in the Diversity Award.

Along the way he exposed Frank Ellis at the University of Leeds of racism and extremism, and has been called a ‘liar’ by Alan Dershowitz; he has also interviewed the British foreign secretary, the Mayor of London, and, more importantly, the lead singer of Radiohead. In 2008 he graduated from the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University in New York City. He is currently interning at the public television news program, Democracy Now!
