Interesting Facts about Afghanistan Today

In modern times, since the 19th century, three countries have invaded Afghanistan. These include the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and the United States. As recently as 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and they only left in 1989. During the time that the Soviets were in Afghanistan, between 600,000 and 2 million Afghans were killed and 5 million Afghans were displaced, mostly to neighboring countries.

The Taliban began to rise to power in 1994, and by the end of 2000, they had captured 95% of the country. In 2004 Afghanistan proudly held its first democratic presidential elections.
